SVN aims for children to grow up in their own environment and within their own network. When a child is in a situation in which it is abandoned, abused or forced to perform heavy labour, SVN intervenes. At first we look for possibilities to place the child with family, and then a boarding school is considered as a second best solution.
When these two options are not possible there is nothing else left than to remove the child from a dangerous situation and place him/her in a children’s home. First of all, we see in the children’s home what direct medical, psychological or other assistance these children need. Meanwhile we are looking for a good school and ensure that other children, already present in our house, are full of love and pity on the new child. An own and clean bed, sufficient food and in addition the feeling to be safe are the key points to achieve. SVN considers it important that the children in the children’s home have all they need but also that they are not spoiled. Indeed, their stay is temporary and they turn back in the Nepalese society when they are old enough and trained to take care of themselves. Gifts are given only on special holidays, as established in the calendar, their birthday, or an outstanding school report.
Some of the children in the SVN children homes are physically disabled. They are raised with as little adjustments as possible. Also, because Nepal in general is not adapted for physically disabled people. It is important that they learn to live with their personal situation and that is what we promote and encourage. At a certain age, children will move to secondary education. They can go to a vocational training, where they can live in the hostel of the trainings institute. But we also support the principle of independent living. Learning to live their own life; cooking, washing and ironing, cleaning up your own mess and a timetable of getting up to go to school, homework, dealing with a limited budget for daily living etc, is all in there. Over the weekend, these (big) children can come home. After obtaining their degree, they are in all respects to take care of themselves. They are naturally guided in finding a proper sequel. A part-time job in the morning and generate income to become self-supporting. At the same time and necessary, our door is always open for them as a family home.
The different types of child support are:
Scholarship, the child stays with his or her family and educational cost are partly or completely covered.
Non Formal education, the child receives daily education to create a base for fruther formal education and food on a regular base.
Child clubs, by participating in child clubs children can learn their rights, discuss relevant issues from their surroundings and grow their capacity.
Child Development banks, working children can deposit the few rupees they save on a day in these banks so tat they gain financial independence.
Flexible classes, working children can attend these classes at irregular hours in order to stay connected with education.
Children homes, children that have no other options left will be taken into children homes where they are fully supported.
